Vanlife has proven to be a test of continuously changing plans that we must adjust to and be okay with, whether its changing routes due to weather conditions, aiming to visit friends on weekends (since most everyone we know works Monday – Friday), or prioritizing getting somewhere vs. staying and exploring or simply just staying somewhere to rest or take a break. We knew our route of getting through the North was very rigorous as we wanted to get all the “snow” states done before it got too cold.

The next morning we set out for our next destination of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. My parents live there, and after not seeing them for about a year, we had to make our last “goodbye” before setting out for the west. It also happened to be mid-August, aka: the BEST time of year to be a tourist on the island, or the WORST time to be a local on the island.

Our goal is to explore all 48 continental US states before re-settling in Seattle, unless we find another place that we just can’t live without. After selling our house, Humz’s parents were kind enough to let us park the van in their driveway and bum off their power/water/indoor plumbing/laundry/wifi/general hospitality as we eased into vanlife. They didn’t really have a choice; we just kind of showed up and wouldn’t leave until we were able to furnish the van and tie up the loose ends with the entire moving process. Our first night sleeping in the Travato was in their driveway, and a sleepless night it was.

We first had Travato-Training-Camp (TTC) as I like to call it, a 2-hour training session at the dealer where they teach you what every nob, button, and sensor does, and of course what’s on everyone’s mind: how to dump your black water tank.
